Generic Butamed, Phenylbutazone, a Useful Drug to Treat Arthritic and Inflammatory Disorders in Horses Part 1
Generic Butamed (Phenylbutazone) is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory medicine, used to treat myositic, arthritic, rheumatic and inflammatory disorders in horses. The main component of this drug is Phenylbutazone which belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Phenylbutazone is offered in different forms such as oral paste syringes, tablets, injectable and oral powder.
Indication
Generic Butamed is indicated to treat pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, sprains, fractures, and painful injured joints.
Contra-Indications
Generic Butamed should not be administered to horses that have severe liver, kidney or heart problem. It is also not recommended for horses with a past record of gastrointestinal tract ulceration or blood dyscrasias.
This drug therapy should not be recommended for horses being treated with coumarin anticoagulants. This drug can be administered after 6 weeks of discontinuation of coumarin anticoagulants.

The drug can work better if it is administered to the horse 30 minutes before feeding.

The initial recommended dose of oral paste for horse is 450kg -10ml twice daily as a loading dose. Then it can be given 5ml daily for 4 days. Subsequently a dosage of 5ml can be given daily or every alternate day as necessary.
Ponies
Pony requires a starting dose ranging from 225kg to 5ml daily for 4 days. Subsequently it can be given 2.5ml daily or
